Specialty Furniture Products became involved in designing and building
|
|
special needs beds when we were approached by a friend with a special
|
|
needs child who outgrew her crib. She now needed a twin size bed that was
|
|
safer than a crib with no entrapment areas. It had to have locking rails, so
|
|
the child couldn’t fall out accidentally. Visibility into and out of the bed
|
|
was important. The child must feel safe, but not confined. Easy access to
|
|
change the bedding was also necessary. The bed had to look like a piece of
|
|
furniture, not a hospital style bed. Finally, the caregiver needed to be assured
|
|
their special needs child was safe, so they could sleep at night.

|
So we put our design team to work and designed and built a prototype
|
|
bed to satisfy all of these needs. In addition we made sure the bed met or
|
|
exceeded the FDA seven zones of entrapment guidelines. The bed was
|
|
tested and modified, with input from professional caregivers, until the
|
|
final design was approved, and put into production.
The rail system was so unique that we were granted a patent from the United
States Patent Office.
